After five years of dedicated leadership for James Island Outreach, Scott Graule has announced his resignation from the role of Executive Director at the end of March.

During his tenure, Scott has guided the organization through a period of growth in both the number of neighbors assisted and the breadth of services provided to meet community needs. In his first year, the Camp Road facility was opened and JIO established the client choice wellness pantry which has become a model pantry for the Lowcountry Food Bank network. His dedication was instrumental in JIO’s ability to remain continuously open throughout the Covid-19 pandemic to provide essential emergency food assistance. In 2022, Scott led efforts to establish JIO’s HART (Home Accessibility Repairs Team) to fill the unmet needs for home repairs necessary for the health and safety of our clients.

Scott served daily with humility and compassion, connecting with each person who came through the door. His vision and leadership will be greatly missed by the staff, Board, clients, volunteers, and nonprofit partners alike. We wish him the best in his new role as Associate Pastor at Harbor View Presbyterian Church.

We are pleased to announce that Elizabeth Hamilton has been appointed as interim Executive Director while the Board seeks a permanent replacement. Elizabeth has worked closely with Scott and the JIO team as the Administrative Officer for the last three years. We are confident that Scott, Elizabeth, and the team will ensure a smooth transition and will continue the high-quality services that JIO is known to provide. Should you have any questions about the transition, you may contact Elizabeth at or our Board Chair, Al Simmons.

Over the next several months, our Board will be conducting a thorough search to find JIO’s next Executive Director. It is our priority to find a dynamic leader with a true passion for serving our neighbors. Any inquiries regarding the position can be directed to Brandon Stevens or Jay Millen, Board Vice-chair.

Sincerely,

Al Simmons, Chair

James Island Outreach Board of Directors
